Positive Poitn
Ram Pothini is back as iSmart Shankar, and like the first installment, he delivers a stellar performance in the sequel as well. His massive attitude and intense dialogue delivery is entertaining once again.
Kavya joins Thapar Ram as her love interest, and the scenes of their combination are worth watching. Sanjay Dutt, playing a mafia don, adds some weight to the film, even though his performance is perfectly fine.
The rest of the cast performs within its limits, and the action sequences are performed well in some parts.
Negitive Point
While the basic plot is good, justifying the decision to make a sequel, Puri Jagannadh and his team were not interested in making the narration interesting. The story needs a captivating screenplay, which is lacking, especially in the second half, which makes it difficult to stay busy.
The emotional aspects fail to resonate due to lack of depth. It seems that many characters are there just to fill the screen. Jhansi’s character could have been more impactful, and her flashback scenes would have put on some emotional weight. It is better not to mention Pragati’s exaggerated performance.
The comedy falls flat. Ali’s character and his comic efforts are more disturbing than entertaining. The songs and their placement feel out of sync with the narrative, seemingly only included to give the audience a break but fail to do so.
Manishrama’s trademark intense background score, which could have elevated the film, is a major drawback in the sequel. Face-to-face scenes with Sanjay Dutt don’t work, due to which his Telugu debut is less than impressive. The dubbing is uncomfortable, and his persona is not well developed.
Actor Performances
Ustad Ram takes us back to his ‘mighty star’ days as Shankar once again. It’s a character he basically loves and it shows up on screen. He gives his heart and soul for it and we don’t see any flaw in it. Whether one likes or dislikes the film, no one will find any problem in Ram’s performance.
Whether it’s dance or overall body language and dialogue delivery on action, Ram literally brings Shankar’s character to life. Ram slipped into the part as if he had never left the set from the first part. That’s the main reason why one is attached to the narrative for any period of time. Kavya Thapar was earlier paired opposite Ram in Eagle and Oru Peru Bhairakona in Double Smart Shankar. She looks a little heavier here, which makes her look a bit physically imposing. Dubbing adds to the problem. She plays the role of a typical puri jugaadh heroine. It’s okay that it’s not bad to dismiss outright nor is it good to praise.
Technical
It’s the perfect time to portray Puri Jaganadh and come up with a script that can revive the massive, old style that many fans are missing from. Unfortunately, this is another weak film that doesn’t do him any good. The story is decent, but the execution is wrong.
Editor Junaid Siddiqui could have improved the film by carving out many unnecessary scenes that disrupt the flow, especially in the second half. Raj Thota’s cinematography is satisfactory, and production values are equal. However, Manishrama could have done better, at least in some places to elevate the film.
Reception
Deccan Chronicle’s BVS Prakash gave 2/5 stars and wrote ” After flopping like a lager, renowned director Puri Jaganadh came back with double iSmart, but the sci-fi plot he has chosen is not exciting enough. Sasidhar Adivi of The Times. Now gave 2/5 stars and wrote “Double iSmart is a painful affair!” Soumya Rajendran of The News Minute gave 1/5 stars and wrote “Puri fries our brain with double agony. In a negative review, Nishita Nayapati of Hindustan Times wrote “Puri Jaganadh is so focused on liking his lead character that this time, he forgets to focus on a coherent story. “
