About Broken Links
Broken links (dead links) are URLs that no longer work, typically returning 404 (Not Found) or other error status codes.
- 404 Not Found: Most common broken link error – page doesn’t exist
- 403 Forbidden / 401 Unauthorized: Access to the resource is denied
- 500 Internal Server Error: Server-side issue
- Timeout / Connection Error: Server not responding
- Broken links hurt user experience and can negatively impact SEO
- Regularly check for broken links to maintain website health
For SEO, fix broken links by either restoring the content, implementing proper redirects (301), or removing the links entirely.
