Kalki 2898 Ad Storyline

During the Kurukshetra War, Ashwatthama was cursed by Lord Krishna for attaining immortality and witnessing humanity during the Kalivaga. It can be rid of the protection of Kalki’s mother, the last incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Six thousand years later, in the future world, the deserted city of Kasi is ruled by a wicked Yaskin; its complex is run by Commander Manas, whose team is working on Project K for Yaskin. They catch fertile women and their serum is used to extend yaskine’s life. But hardly a woman lives more than 120 days of fertility.

Sim 80 (symmetry) presses 150 days and is about to fulfill the same belief as others. But managing to escape with the help of a few rebels, Ashwatthama realises that Sumathi is the woman he is there to protect and comes to her aid. Yaskan and Manas are desperate to find Sumiti but Ashwathama stands between them. A confusion arises when Bhairon comes to the rescue of Sumiti where he and Ashwathama clash that he is either an enemy of Sumiti.

Plot

Ashwatthama attempted to murder Uttara’s unborn child following the Kurukshetra battle. For committing this act, Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, curses him for roaming the earth as an immortal and witnessing the suffering of humanity as a result of social and moral deterioration during Kali Yoga. His divine jewel is also taken from his forehead, and his salvation is destined only through the protection of Kalki’s mother, The 10th and final incarnation of Vishnu, till the end of Kali Yoga.

In 2898, 6,000 years after the events of the Kurukshetra War, Kasi stands as the last famous city in a metaphysical world dominated by a 200-year-old autocratic god, King Supreme Yaskin. Yaskin rules from the ‘complex’, an inverted pyramid megastructure that floats over the city. Its authority is enforced by Commander Manas, Councillor Bani, and an army of soldiers who avoid threats, especially the rebels of the hidden city of Shambhala, who believe in Kalki’s prophecy.

Raya, a young girl disguised as a boy, escaped enlistment in Project K with the help of shambhalan rebels. Raya finds shelter in a cave where she encounters Ashwathama. She unknowingly brings him her divine jewel, which was inadvertently captured by him during his escape. After placing semen in her forehead, Ashwatthama found out that a woman was pregnant with Kalki. Together they went looking for him.

Meanwhile, in the complex, SUM-80, a subject from Project K who is hiding her 150-day pregnancy, has dropped out and has been forced to undergo an evacuation procedure. Manas removes a drop of serum from her foetus before she is rescued by the Shambhulan rebels, who renamed her Samathi. Their transport en route to Shambhala is ambushed by fazal hunters and invaders, but they stop them. Bhairava, a grace hunter, follows with his AI supercar, Boji.

Bhairava tricks a rebel to take him to Shambala, then disguises himself as Ashwathama and convinces Sumathi to run away from Shambhala with him, but the real Ashwatthama stops him. As they fight, Manas and his soldiers reach Shambhala and breach his defences. Shambhala’s leader, Mary, tries to protect Samathi, but she is killed by Manas, while his soldiers subdue Shambhalan’s rebels.

Ashwathama is then caught and stopped by Manas. Ashwatthama’s moving stick and an address of the tree of life later fall into the hands of the unconscious Bhairava, who awakens both the weapon and Bhairava, and shows that he is karna’s avatar or child. Empowered by Karan’s command, in a trance-like state, Bhairava easily defeated the invading soldiers and killed Manas. Bhairav was brought out of his trance by Boji and took Samathi away, as Ashwatthama watches.

In a scene in the middle credits, Yaskin uses the serum drop extracted from Somathi’s fetus on herself, acquiring the power of a partially unborn Kalki and becoming a supernatural human being in adulthood. He picks up Arjuna’s command, Gandyu, and vows to reshape the world.

The film recorded the highest opening for an Indian film in 2024. The film grossed Rs 149.3 crore from India and crossed around ₹250 crore in two days. Kalki 2898 AD debuted at number three at the worldwide box office, Inside Out 2 and A Quiet Place: Day One in its opening weekend. It earned an estimated ₹484 crore worldwide from its opening weekend of four days, and ₹800 crore in 11 days of release. It became the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in India, surpassing Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (2023) in 40 days. During its over 50 days of theatre, the film has grossed ₹1,040-1,200 crore worldwide as against a production budget of ₹600 crores.
