Analysis
“Matka” is an earthen pot in Hindi. The game of gambling, which involved playing cards in a pot and predicting numbers, came to be known as matka and was a popular pastime among Indian men fifty years ago. The life of Ratan Khatri, a key figure in popularising this form of gambling, served as an inspiration for varun tej’s character.
Although the game is central to the story of the film, it is hardly featured in the plot. Apart from about 20 minutes, matka gambling plays a minimal role in the narrative.
The narrative starts with Vasu’s early years and progresses through his ascent to prominence as a businessman. The film reaches its climax only at intervals, when Vasu discovers matka, introduces it to Vizag, and spreads it all over India.
By the time we see him rise to the position of Matka King, we are already on a break, it feels like we have watched the entire film because of the slow pace.

Perofrmance
Varun Tej proved that he can play this kind of role well. As he portrays Vasu, who transforms from a passionate young man to a matka king, he effectively captures the body language of the character and presents his dialogues with conviction. However, his performance is repeated after a certain point like his character. Yet their efforts and performance are commendable.
Meenakshi Chaudhary, as Varun Tej’s wife, has a limited screen presence.
Nora Fatehi is seen as a charming seductress, while Naveen Chandra plays the role of an ordinary CBI officer.
Kishore is inspired in his role as a politician. Ajoy Ghosh delivers acceptable performances, and Saloni plays an important role.
Marketing
On January 19, 2024, the makers shared a glimpse of ‘Matka – Opening Bracket’ from the film on varun tej’s birthday, followed by the first look released on August 11, 2024, which showcased Varun Tej.
On October 5, 2024, Matka’s teaser was unveiled at the Raj Yuvraj (G3) Theatre in Vijayawada. According to the Times of India, the film earned only 2.11 crore INR on its opening weekend.
Music
GV Prakash’s songs are flawed here. What makes them worse is placement. In the story, they are portrayed as speed breakers. Coming from behind during the end tests one’s patience. The background is relatively fine. But, even here, it’s fine only in parts, and not entirely satisfactory. The cinematography is good. The vintage mode of old has been caught cleanly. A sense of authenticity is brought about by visuals which is the best thing here. Editing should have been better. The narrative feels too dragged and never-ending after a point. Crispness is missing.
Vyra Entertainments and SRT Entertainments have good production values. As mentioned earlier, a sense of authenticity has been brought about by the technical team (artwork, set design, costumes, etc.). Props to the makers to back them up in getting the right perspective.
