How UUIDs Work
UUIDs (Universally Unique Identifiers) are 128-bit numbers used to identify information:
- Version 1: Time-based with MAC address
- Version 4: Random (most common)
- Nil UUID: All zeros (00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000)
- Format: 32 hex digits in 5 groups (8-4-4-4-12)
- Uniqueness: Probability of collision is extremely low

About UUIDs
UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit label used for information identification.
- Versions: 1 (time-based), 2 (DCE security), 3 (MD5 hash), 4 (random), 5 (SHA-1 hash)
- Probability of Collision: Extremely low (1 in 2.71 quintillion for v4)
- Common Uses: Database keys, session IDs, file names, distributed systems
- Standards: RFC 4122, ISO/IEC 11578:1996
Note: While UUID collisions are statistically improbable, they are not impossible in theory.
